August is here and Peridot is in the limelight. Its vibrant yellowish green to green color it was an obvious choice for the birthstone of the summer month of August. It complements sunny days and light summer attire.
Peridot has been an inspiration for thousands of years; it has been found in jewelry dated over four thousand years old. Peridot has been mined in the Middle and Far East, as well as the Americas; it is no wonder that Peridot has such a rich history.
Ancient Romans revered Peridot as the “Evening Emerald” because its brilliance did not fade in lamp light; rather, it appeared to glow in the weak light. This may have contributed to the belief that it can make dreams come true and ward off evil spirits. Hawaiian tradition claims Peridot to be the tears of the goddess Pele, with all of its heritage and folklore Peridot will always remain a popular gem.
